While your child gets ready for the day ahead, take the opportunity to remind him or her about their value — including just how wonderfully unique they are.

Activity

As your child puts on each article of clothing (such as a sock, shoe, coat, or backpack), challenge him or her to share one special thing about themselves. It can be a skill they’re good at, something they like to do, or even just a preference they have. If your child struggles to think of something, help! Share aloud traits about him or her that you’ve come to know and appreciate. Participating in the prior will help your child grow in their ability to articulate their own identity. And hearing the latter will help demonstrate that they have value — that they are worth getting to know and being around.

‍After the activity, explain to your child that every single one of us is uniquely made by God. Not one of us is the same! And as we learn and grow into who God made us to be, we discover more about ourselves, too.

‍End the activity by pointing out the various traits about your child that you identified together. Share that — like a complex puzzle of many different pieces, God made your child a beautiful mix of many different skills, preferences, and talents. Challenge him or her to remember that they are a masterpiece created by God Himself.

After completing this activity, read through the following verse and prayer with your child.

Verse

So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:27 (NLT)

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for creating us! Help us to remember that You made each of us on purpose and for a purpose. And whenever we feel all wrong or not-quite-right, help us to remember that You don’t make mistakes.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
